From almost the dawn of time the mythic Three Graces were considered the very heart of humanity. In ancient Greek and Roman times they were either considered goddesses themselves, or the companions of the gods. The Three Graces represent Charm, Charity and Gratitude. Without the Three Graces, life would not be bearable. The Three Graces gave humanity friendliness, uprightness of character, sweetness and conversation.
Throughout history many great artists and sculptors such as Rubens, Raphael and Picasso have worked to to capture the Three Graces in paint or stone. And cameos depicting the Three Graces are among the oldest ever carved.
In classical art and story the Three Graces are always depicted with the three female figures forming a circle. Often the representations were of women dancing and always they were surrounded by nature. Often the women were portrayed nude or covered in a light transparent cloth.
Cameos are one of the oldest forms of art, many dating back 2000 years. Each cameo is the work of an artist of great skill and talent. Hand carved cameos are true one-of-a-kind works of art, possessing a timeless beauty. Today there are only a very few master cameo carvers.

The original classic hand carved conch shell cameo, pictured in close-up on the above right, is carved by hand, with no two cameos ever exactly the same. It is this style of cameo that has been carved by master carvers for hundreds of years. Hand carving cameos is an art passed from down from generation to generation.
The shell cameo is carved from a light colored vein layer by layer, into the lower and darker background. The finest cameos have a deep three dimensional image.
This is a large, full brooch size cameo measuring 30 millimeters tall by 22 milliimeters wide. The heavy 14k gold brooch frame is custom made to hold each individual cameo.
The blue agate cameo shown on the left is a much newer form of art. Using agate stone, the design is carved by laser, underwater to reduce the heat of the laser. Each cameo is carved using a single master template created by a master cameo artist. This technique is capable of considerably more detail and shading of colors and textures, not possible in a hand carved conch shell cameo.
For example, notice that the clothing covering the the Three Graces is truly transparent in the blue-hued agate version. Also notice the detail in the hands, the feet, the wisps of hair, the basket and even the stone pavement, impossible in a hand carved cameo. Like the shell cameo described above, this blue agate cameo is a full large brooch size, measuring 30 millimeters by 22 millimeters.
Both these magnificent cameos come from the Di Vinci factory, located near the Bay of Naples, in Italy. Mountains, pounding surf, wind and sunshine paint a magical background for the world's center of the ancient art of cameo carving. It's no wonder that the world's greatest carvers are found here.
Both cameos feature a ribbon style 14k gold frame with both a pin and a hidden pendant bale, which folds out of sight when the cameo is worn as a pin.
