Venus is the ancient Goddess of Love and Beauty. Master carvers are able to carve the intricate design shown above, with the addition of flowers and ribbons in her hair and the gentle folds of her gown. Lesser carvers omit these images or the quality is greatly reduced.
The Di Vinci factory is located near the Bay of Naples, located on the road between Naples and Pompeii. Mountains, pounding surf, wind and sunshine paint a magical background for the world's center of the ancient art of cameo carving. It's no wonder that the world's greatest carvers are found here.
Our "Venus Cameo" is carved by hand and no two are ever exactly alike. The cameo is carved from the conch shell, which is imported into Italy from the West Indies or Madagascar. Only one to three cameos can be carved from a single shell. The design is carved from a light colored vein layer by layer, into the lower and darker background. The finest cameos have a deep three dimensional image.
The heavy 14k gold brooch frame is custom made to hold each individual cameo. A hidden bale folds out of sight when the cameo is worn as a pin or folds out to hold the chain when worn as a pendant.
